Round 1 — Phoenix Int'l Raceway

With 13 Radicals attending our first round of competition, the weekend proved to be a great success. Only 2 drivers had experience at PIR so Friday testing saw lap times drop dramatically each session. John Morris used Friday to shake down his new PR6 as it was sent straight from the factory to the event.

Qualifying on Saturday was exciting. It was a game of getting clear track to put in your best lap. Here's how it ended up.

The qualifying race Saturday afternoon was meant to set starting positions for the main event. As the Main event Sunday was rained out, final points were issued from the qualifying race.

Don Simons was able to get out in front on the start, but it didn't take long for John Morris to retake the lead. After sliding past a corner John lost the lead again but gathered it back up for the victory.

Tim Day and Dave Tweedlie had an incredible battle for most of the race. Running side by side in several corners, they started getting reeled in by Cody Martin. As they rounded the final corner for the checkered flag, lapped traffic played a part in a side by side finish with Tim just edging out for the win.

Sundays 1 hour Enduro was a new experience for drivers & crew. Most drivers chose to team with another car. Dave Tweedlie flew in a ringer (Bob Majorino) to share the drive with him. Matt Maddox and Dan Rowe were the only drivers to brave the whole hour on their own.

All the Radicals ended up late to the grid so they found themselves starting at the back of a large field of Historic Formula Cars & Sports Racers. As a spectator it looked very tight into turn one for the start. Don Simons worked through traffic quickly to take the overall lead in just a few laps.

Pitstops required a mandatory 5 minute stop, so there was no rush in getting cars fueled or drivers changed. Everyone's pitstop went to plan.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the event. Special Thanks to Ed Swart at HSR West for accommodating all of our unique requests, my wife Jolene for the great food all weekend, Slim and Radical Sportscars support and John Morris for all of his help in making this possible.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Firebird Raceway on March 30, April 1 for Round #2 of the 2007 Radical Cup.
